Pierre Joseph Redouté

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the most renowned botanical artists in the history of art, celebrated for his refined depictions of flowers and plants. Born into a family of Belgian artists, he spent most of his professional life in France, where he worked with leading botanists of his time and created illustrations for scientific publications. His works combine botanical accuracy with a distinctive artistic elegance.

Roses hold a special place in Redouté’s legacy — his depictions of roses are considered the pinnacle of his artistic work. He worked in watercolor on vellum, achieving subtle color transitions, translucency, and remarkable detail in petals and leaves. Redouté was also associated with the French imperial court and created botanical illustrations for the collections of Joséphine, Napoleon’s wife. Through his combination of scientific precision and decorative beauty, his works remain classics of botanical illustration.
